kanpur: couch potatoes across kanpur might now perforce have to live without their routine diet of television soaps -- kaun banega crorepati, kyunki saas bhi kabhi bahu thi, kahani ghar ghar ki, shagun, kora kagaz, saaya, diya jale kahin jiyaa...etc. in order to meet the requirements of their customers, cable operators or franchisee holders often ran satellite channel cables through the poles of the kanpur electric supply cooperation (kesco) and bharat sanchar nigam limited (bsnl).
there were about 250 small and big cable operators and franchisee holders in the city providing almost 70 per cent of the city populations and these cable operators carried wires from one colony to other through electric and telephone poles. these encircling wires on poles and even on street lights were now a common sight in the city. interestingly, these cable operators wrapped their cable wires on the electric poles, as a result of which several short circuit cases had occurred in various parts of the city. in fact, the operators often climbed the electric poles to rectify cable faults on complaints from customers, unmindful of electric wires. not only this, the cable operators also disturbed telephone wires without fear as no one dared to annoy them. as a customer r k shukla of p road area said, "we can't live without our favourite tv programmes...so we don't want to annoy our cable operators." it came as no surprise then that neither the telecommunication department nor the electric supply department had taken any step to remove cable wires from their poles.
